i’ve never tried the this technique before, and have always loved the way it looked. you’ve seen it all over pinterest: the famous ombre cake!
i won’t lie, yes, it’s a little extra work and more than a few extra dishes (this recipe works best if someone else is doing those!), but the outcome is so worth it. i was delighted to see everyone so enthralled by it. for a 9″ four tiered cake, i doubled this recipe, and added purple food colouring gel to each layer batter, just reducing the amount for each layer. using your favourite boxed mix is fine if you prefer! a simple vanilla buttercream topped the cake (double the frosting recipe if you’re doubling the cake), and i loved the simplicity of the flavour because it let the layers and the topper shine.
