as a makeup artist, the questions i’m most often asked are skin related. what do i use? how do i apply foundation? which products are the best? with so many makeup products out there geared at covering up our skin, it’s easy to lose sight about what foundation is actually for. the skin coloured makeup is designed to conceal imperfections like colour irregularity, blemishes and anything else you’d like to hide. if you have gorgeous skin, why the heck would you want to cover it up?
take a page out of emma watson’s book, and keep it simple and sheer; if she has any irregularity in her skin, you wouldn’t be able to tell, and it looks completely natural and fresh. she’s even embracing her sweet freckles!
whitney port, on the other hand, has the wrong idea. her skin is naturally beautiful, and while she may want a sheer coverage, like a tinted moisturizer (i highly recommend this one), she doesn’t need the thick application we see here. i’m sure this isn’t the look she was going for, it even looks like her makeup artist used a luminous formulation, but it serves as a great example of going too far with it. the effect looks chalky in comparison to emma’s, wouldn’t you agree?
if you’re looking for a new foundation, i recently posted about some of the latest and greatest ones out on the market. these are all luminous foundations that will enhance your complexion instead of dulling it out; allow your natural, beautiful skin to shine through and embrace it!
tips for getting a sheer and natural foundation:
- mix foundation into your daily moisturizer
- apply it with your fingers and blend it into the skin
- if you want to apply your foundation with a sponge, dampen it with a little water first
- look for sheer formulations
- spot cover problem areas with a concealer instead of full face foundation
